Voting reform bill fails in test vote in the Senate

By the Associated Press and KFDI News:

The Democrats’ sweeping attempt to rewrite U.S. election and voting law has stalled in the U.S. Senate. The bill failed in a key test vote Tuesday, blocked by a wall of united Republican opposition.

The measure would bring the largest overhaul of the electoral system in a generation, striking down hurdles to voting that advocates view as the Civil Rights fight of the era. But Republican leader Mitch McConnell called the bill a “a solution looking for a problem.”

The rejection forces majority Democrats to reckon with what comes next in the narrowly divided Senate. Pressure has been mounting on Democrats to change Senate filibuster rules to enact President Joe Biden’s agenda.

Kansas Senator Jerry Moran issued a statement on social media calling the For the People Act a “monstrous bill” that would federalize elections, undermine common-sense voter ID laws, and override duly elected state legislatures.   Senator Roger Marshall issued a statement saying “Our goal has always been to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat. When you eliminate voter I.D., it makes it easier to cheat. When you promote ballot harvesting, it makes it easier to cheat.  This bill would have decreased the value of one of the greatest privileges we have in this nation – the opportunity to get out and vote.”
