The program designed to keep people behind on utility payments from having their services cut over the winter takes effect in just a few days.
The Cold Weather Rule is officially in place starting Monday, November 1, and will stay in effect through March 31. This has been in place since 1983, and keeps utility companies from disconnecting power or gas at time when temperatures are forecast to be near freezing.
This rule also requires utility companies to offer a 12-month payment plan to allow consumers to maintain or re-establish service. Any residential customer with a past due balance will qualify for payment arrangements, but it’s the customer’s responsibility to contact their utility company and make arrangements. There are also some payment terms that have to be agreed to. Follow the link below to get all the details on the Cold Weather Rule program.
