Two Wichita officers injured in shooting at south side apartment

Two Wichita police officers were injured in a confrontation with a domestic violence suspect at a south side apartment late Friday night.

Officers went to the 2600 block of South Emporia to arrest a man, later identified as 24 year old Malik Rodgers, for violent incidents with his girlfriend Thursday and Friday. Rodgers struggled with officers and a Taser was used, but he locked himself in a bathroom.   Officers forced the door open and Rodgers fired shots from a handgun.

One officer was hit in the arm and the other officer was hit in the leg.  They were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  Other officers contained Rodgers inside the apartment and a SWAT team was called to the scene.  Efforts to communicate with him were unsuccessful and a SWAT team went into the home later to find Rodgers dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.   He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Rodgers had previous felony convictions for attempted second degree murder and aggravated assault.  He was on parole with the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Police said they were called to a business in the 4800 block of South Washington around 10:40 p.m. Friday.  They talked with a 22-year-old woman who said that Rodgers went into her home in the 500 block of South Lulu earlier in the day.   He did not have permission to enter the home, and the woman said he punched and threatened her and pointed a handgun at her.  The woman also told officers that there was an incident at the home on Thursday where Rodgers grabbed her neck, causing injuries, and a family member had to restrain him to prevent further violence.    The investigation led officers to the apartment on South Emporia where the shooting took place.

Police said no officers fired any shots during the incident.  The two injured officers have been employed with the Wichita Police Department for less than a year.
