Disaster emergency declared for Kansas because of expected fire danger

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a State of Disaster Emergency for the state for the next six days because of conditions that will create an extreme to critical fire danger across the state.

The declaration will allow state agencies to position firefighting equipment and manpower to help with the local response to wildfire situations.   Governor Kelly is urging Kansans to be aware of the potential for wildland fires and to be careful with sources of fire.  A burn ban is in effect for April for Wichita and Sedgwick County and other locations as part of a Flint Hills smoke management plan.

Gusty north winds are expected through Friday and very dry conditions are also in the forecast with low humidity.
