Wichita Firefighter Placed on Leave As Part of WPD Text Message Investigation

A Wichita firefighter was placed on administrative leave as part of the investigation into text messages sent by Wichita police officers that were deemed racist, homophobic, and sexist.

Fire Chief Tammy Snow was notified on April 22nd about the involvement of the firefighter in the investigation, and the firefighter was placed on administrative leave the same day. The City of Wichita confirmed the suspension on Tuesday, May 3rd.

The messages were discovered while the Wichita Police Department was investigating allegations of domestic violence involving a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputy. The deputy’s cell phone was seized as part of a search warrant on April 8, 2021.

The details were later leaked to the Wichita Eagle.
