Wichita man sentenced for involvement in prison-based drug ring

A Wichita man has been sentenced in federal court to 24 and a half years in prison for a series of drug trafficking crimes.

45-year-old Travis Vontress was convicted by a federal jury in March on charges that included conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, conspiracy to distribute heroin, conspiracy to distribute cocaine, maintaining a drug-involved premises, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Vontress and another man, 58-year-old Kevin Lewis of Wichita, were convicted for their involvement in a drug ring operated by inmates of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.  Two inmates used cell phones to direct people in Wichita.   There were 21 people who pleaded guilty to charges in the case and 19 of them are from Wichita.
