A 24-year-old Kansas City man has been charged with first degree murder in the fatal shooting of a police officer during a traffic stop in North Kansas City, Missouri.

Prosecutors announced charges against Joshua Rocha, and his bond was set at $2 million.  Rocha is also charged with armed criminal action, and he was scheduled for arraignment on Thursday.

North Kansas City officer Daniel Vasquez, 32, was shot when he stopped a vehicle Tuesday morning for an expired temporary tag.   Prosecutors said the driver fired a shot through his car window and then got out and fired again at Vasquez, who was on the ground.   The driver sped away but he was later caught by Kansas City officers.

Clay County prosecuting attorney Daniel White said the suspect could get the death penalty or life without parole if he is convicted.
