Students returned to class Monday to begin a new school year in the Wichita Public Schools.

School superintendent Dr. Alicia Thompson visited the Gordon Parks Academy for a back-to-school parade to welcome students.  She also stopped by her alma mater, Heights High School to talk with students and staff.    Dr. Thompson then went to Cloud Elementary School to visit the classroom of new teacher Alexandra Gilmore.

Dr. Thompson told KFDI’s news partners at KWCH that the theme for the new school year is “Connected, United, WPS Proud,” and she said an effort is underway to connect families and the community back into the schools.   The district has welcomed over 400 new teachers and staff for the new year.

School zones will be in effect and drivers are urged to watch for youngsters on their way to classes.
