The man who confessed to the Parkland, Florida, school massacre will have his life spared. Jurors in the sentencing trial of Nikolas Cruz are recommending life in prison.
The judge read the verdicts Thursday morning in a Fort Lauderdale courtroom.
Cruz pleaded guilty to all charges stemming from the 2018 shooting that killed 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty for the now 24-year-old.
Court cameras showed family members of the Parkland school shooting victims shaking their heads in disbelief as the verdict counts were being read. Many families told reporters earlier they expected Cruz to be sentenced to death.
