Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Kansas Navy Veteran Cleland McBurney. He joined the Navy in 1953 and out of 90 in his battalion, he was the only one to pass every test to become a naval aviator. With thousands of flight hours under his belt, he did a lot of different missions.  Cleland would fly reconnaissance missions out of Guam to track typhoons by flying into them. His Navy journey also took him to Antarctica where he was a ground control radar operator, in charge of the ice runway.  Which meant he was the officer in charge of all the flights coming down from New Zealand, bringing down personnel and all the cargo. After about 20 years in the Navy, Cleland retired in 1972. Cleland is grateful that everywhere he went, he learned something new.  Thank you for sharing your story Cleland and THANK YOU for your service.
