The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a stream advisory for Slate Creek and the confluence of Slate Creek near Newton.
The advisory was issued because of operation problems at a wastewater treatment plant operated by the City of Newton. Crews have been working to repair the problem.
There are concerns about the possibility of higher bacteria levels and contaminants in Slate Creek. People who live near the creek are urged to avoid going into the creek and they should not allow children or pets into the creek.
Testing will be conducted when the problems have been resolved at the treatment plant.
