Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter released more details at a news briefing Tuesday on a fatal shooting by a Goddard police officer after a chase.
The man who was killed in the confrontation was identified as 39-year-old Michael James Trask, who is from the Lake Afton area. A police officer tried to stop him for a traffic violation around 9:45 Monday morning, but he sped south from Goddard on 199th Street West. Sheriff Easter said the officer called off the chase due to high speeds, but continued to follow Trask, who turned east onto 63rd Street South.
Easter said Trask stopped his truck near 183rd Street West and sat in the pickup, refusing six commands from the officer to show his hands. Trask then got out of his truck and walked toward the officer, carrying a gun in his right hand. He refused nine more commands from the officer to drop the gun. Easter said the officer was out of his patrol car and had moved behind it, and as Trask continued to move toward him the officer fired eight shots. Trask was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS crews.
Easter said just after the incident happened, dispatchers received a call from a woman who said she was Trask’s wife. The woman said her husband was in a high speed chase and said he was suicidal and armed with a gun. Easter said investigators have learned that there were some family issues that have taken place over the past couple of weeks, and they are looking to see if those issues led to Monday’s incident.
Easter said the gun that Trask was carrying turned out to be a BB gun. It was found in a ditch after the shooting.
Still photos from the incident, taken from video cameras, were shown to reporters during Tuesday’s briefing, but no videos were released because the investigation is continuing. Easter said information will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office.
The officer who fired the shots has been placed on leave under standard procedure, pending the outcome of the investigation.
