Changes have been made in local regulations on home-occupied day care facilities in Wichita. The City Council has approved changes to zoning regulations that govern local day care operations.
Home-occupied day care facilities that have the designation of “Day Care, Limited,” will be allowed to have up to 12 children. The previous limit was 10. These facilities will also be able to have two employees. Planning director Scott Wadle said this will bring city regulations more in line with regulations from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
City staff had a meeting last year to discuss child care regulations and learned that a shortage of child care in Wichita had reached a crisis point. Local child care advocate Connor Hampton said the change will have an immediate impact on families that have not had access to child care.
The city estimates that there are around 299 home day care facilities in Wichita.
