Traffic came to a standstill on I-235 in north Wichita because of a number of accidents caused by slick driving conditions.
Several accidents were reported on I-235 and K-96 west of Broadway, and accidents were also reported on K-96 at Meridian and at West Street.
No serious injuries were reported in the crashes.
A light drizzle began to fall early in the afternoon and created slick conditions on the elevated highways. Freezing rain and sleet were expected to continue into the evening hours for south central and southeast Kansas. A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect through 10 p.m.
Warmer temperatures are expected for the weekend and south central Kansas will have a slight risk of severe thunderstorms for late Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening.
