Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors 13-year-old Eagle Scout Sheldon Gentry and the special project he finished to honor Veterans in his town. For an Eagle Scout project Gentry was the driving force in creating a memorial plaque , with 15 names of soldiers from his town who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, from World War I to present. Gentry heard the names on that plaque at least twice a year. His grandpa, retired Marine Lt. Col. Dick Merritt, has brought Gentry along to veterans events since before he could remember. “I will always remember that they always said the names of the fallen soldiers who died in the war. And I always thought that was like a big part of it. So I decided that I should do a plaque with their names on it,” he said. “It’s important to have them remembered every day of the year … because they fought for the country and died in battle for the country. And that was really important.” Thank you Gentry for creating such an important historical marker and to your Grandpa and the 15 names on that plaque, THANK YOU for your service.
