Newton police discovered an improvised explosive device Saturday in an empty lot, and a Wichita police bomb squad was called to dispose of it.
A Newton officer was called to a report of a suspicious device in the 900 block of North Sherman, and the officer reported that it appeared to be a homemade pipe bomb that someone had tried but failed to set off. The Wichita Police Department bomb squad was called to the scene a short time later, and the device was x-rayed. The device was contained and transported to Wichita for disposal.
Newton police are still investigating and there is no word on where the device came from.
