Most of the Kansas members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted yes as the House gave approval late Wednesday to a bill to raise the nation’s debt ceiling.

The bill passed in a 314-117 vote that saw majorities in both parties support the agreement.

Democrat Sharice Davids voted yes, along with Republicans Ron Estes and Jake LaTurner.   First District congressman Tracey Mann voted no and stated in a press release,  “Today, America is at $31 trillion in debt, and in a matter of months, we will be at $34 trillion. This must end. Americans deserve a well-thought-out plan for addressing our skyrocketing national debt.”

The legislation suspends the debt ceiling and cuts nondefense discretionary spending over the next two years. It also claws back unspent money from the COVID-19 relief bill, some funding from the IRS and imposes new work requirements on older Americans who receive food stamps through SNAP. The Treasury Department estimates the U.S. could default as early as Monday if the deal isn’t passed.

The bill now goes to the Senate.
