Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach has filed a motion in federal court to nullify a 2019 court order that requires the state to issue corrected birth certificates with accurate gender markers for transgender residents.
Kobach said the passage of a new state law, known as the Women’s Bill of Rights, requires state agencies that collect vital statistics to identify individuals according to their sex at birth. This would apply to birth certificates and driver’s licenses. The law, Senate Bill 180, goes into effect July 1st after the legislature voted to override Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of the bill.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas has condemned Kobach’s action and is planning to fight it in court. ACLU Kansas Executive Director Micha Kubic argued in a press release that this is an attack on transgender Kansans just trying to live their lives.
