A high school student in Oklahoma was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition after an accident on Monday.
Newkirk Public Schools officials said a 16-year-old girl was using a crosswalk to return to the high school after a lunch break when she was hit by a semi. She was crossing Highway 77, which runs through the center of Newkirk. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating. The girl was flown by medical helicopter to a Wichita hospital. Her name has not been released.
Newkirk school superintendent Todd Overstreet said in a statement on social media that counselors were made available to schools after the news of the accident. He urged teachers and students in Newkirk to keep the student in their thoughts and prayers.
