The Sedgwick County Zoo has announced the arrival of a baby chimpanzee. She was born August 20th and her name is Alizeti, which means “sunflower” in Swahili.
The baby girl was born to Chimpanzee Chuckie, but zoo staff determined that Chuckie was not showing appropriate maternal behavior, so it was decided to remove the baby from the troop and put her in the care of a foster mother. Caretakers will look after Alizeti for about two months until she is strong enough to be reunited with the troop and turned over to a foster mother.
