Work begins Monday on a major renovation project for a bridge over the M.S. Mitch Mitchell Floodway, commonly known as the Big Ditch.

The bridge on Zoo Boulevard needs major repair and rehabilitation work.   Sedgwick County is working with the Kansas Department of Transportation and the City of Wichita to coordinate changes in traffic and communication.   About 32,000 vehicles travel over the bridge every day.

Drivers should expect delays and long-term lane closures, and there will be no left turns at the intersection of Zoo Boulevard and Windmill Road.   Drivers who use this route on a regular basis are urged to consider an alternate route.

The project is costing $2.7 million with federal funds covering $2.2 million.  The work is expected to take about a year to complete.
