Temperature records that have stood for more than a century in the Central U.S. could burn up this week.
Forecasters say a swath of the Midwest could see afternoon highs ten to 20 degrees warmer than average. That will mean highs well into the 80s and even near 90, threatening daily records from the 1800s.
Highs across the region are usually in the 60s and lower 70s at the start of October. Dozens of places could break daily heat records, including Des Moines, Iowa; Fargo, North Dakota; Madison, Wisconsin; Omaha, Nebraska and Wichita, Kansas.
