Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has revealed a new license plate design that will be available starting in the spring of 2024.

The new plate has a wheat-yellow color in the background with text in black and midnight blue.  The design pays tribute to the state motto “ad astra per aspera” with the phrase “To The Stars” on the bottom of the plate.

The Kansas Department of Revenue is phasing out the embossed license plates starting in January, and the new plate design will be appearing on vehicles beginning in March.  The state is replacing the embossed plates because of safety concerns, with many of them becoming difficult to read due to significant deterioration.  The new design is expected to help law enforcement and ensure that drivers can be easily identified in case of emergency.

The state released information on the release of the new plates:

  • Vehicle owners who update their registration in January or February and have embossed license plates will get the current design on flat, print-on-demand plates.
  • Vehicle owners who update their registration between March and December and have embossed license plates will get the new design on flat, print-on-demand plates.
  • All other standard flat, print-on-demand plates will continue to use the current design.
