House Republicans have voted to authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Biden.
Republicans have argued that the President benefited from the foreign business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden, while the President has always maintained he had nothing to do with his son’s business. The White House and Democrats have argued that there is no evidence of wrongdoing.
An impeachment inquiry is a step toward potential impeachment. It allows the House to hold public hearings and grants subpoena power for information and documents.
Lawmakers voted 221 to 212 along party lines to approve the resolution. The vote now makes official what former Speaker Kevin McCarthy started in September when he opened the investigation on his own accord.
Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann claimed in a press release that the allegations against the President are credible. Mann voted for the inquiry along with Kansas Republicans Ron Estes and Jake LaTurner. Democratic congresswoman Sharice Davids voted no.
House Republicans are threatening contempt of Congress proceedings against the President’s son. In a surprise move, Hunter Biden said today outside the Capitol he will only testify in his father’s impeachment inquiry in a public hearing, and will not respond to a Republican subpoena about his business dealings. Republican Congressman James Comer of Kentucky said Hunter Biden does not get to set the terms and the investigation involves public corruption at the highest levels of government.
