A judge has sentenced a Wichita woman to over three years in prison for embezzling over $100,000 from a local business.

A sentence of 38 months was handed down to 41-year-old Michelle King after she had pleaded guilty to one count of theft.  She will have 24 months post release supervision.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said King was an accountant for a property management company from August, 2020 to May, 2022.  During that time, she embezzled over $163,600 from five different accounts at the business.  She wrote fraudulent checks, adjusted her personal insurance benefit payments, and took money through electronic funds transfers.

King had filed for probation, arguing that she was under immense pressure to maintain a certain standard of living.   Prosecutors said this was not a substantial and compelling basis for probation.  King was previously convicted of embezzlement from a prior employer and she had admitted to being liable to a more recent third employer for over $36,000. The case was investigated by the Wichita Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit.
