The new City Council in Wichita is looking to undo an action taken by the previous Council regarding campaign contributions.
The previous Council voted January 2nd to make changes in a city ordinance to ban candidates from accepting contributions from corporations or limited liability companies (LLCs). The vote to make that change was 4-3.
On Tuesday, new District 4 Council member Dalton Glasscock said he doesn’t think the issue was handled correctly. He said the change will make contributions less transparent and the Council is already governed by an ethics policy. He said the seven Council members are held to different contribution limits than other officials across the state. He moved to ask staff to bring back a new version of the ordinance that conforms to state law and the city’s previous ordinance.
Glasscock’s motion was approved by Mayor Lily Wu and Council members Glasscock, Becky Tuttle and J.V. Johnston. Council members Brandon Johnson, Mike Hoheisel and Maggie Ballard voted no.
The Council is expected to consider the new ordinance next week.
