Former President Donald Trump won the Iowa Caucus on Monday, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came in second by about 30 percentage points.
DeSantis told supporters in Des Moines “They threw everything but the kitchen sink at us” and in spite of all that, “we got our ticket punched out of Iowa.” DeSantis will be in South Carolina and then New Hampshire. The New Hampshire primary is set for next Wednesday.
Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy is dropping out of the race for president. Ramaswamy suspended his bid after a disappointing showing in the Iowa caucus, deciding to endorse former President Trump after polling a distant fourth. He told supporters in Iowa Monday that there were “two America First candidates,” and that he called Trump earlier in the evening to congratulate and endorse him.
His exit now leaves just Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley as the major players in the field for the GOP nomination.
Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson is ending his run for the White House. He decided to drop out of the race after getting under 200 votes in Monday’s Iowa caucus. In a statement, Hutchinson said his “message of being a principled Republican with experience and telling the truth about the current front runner did not sell in Iowa.”
