Kansas corrections officials said an inmate from Sedgwick County was found unresponsive in his cell at the Lansing Correctional Facility on Saturday, and he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been ordered for 51-year-old Eric Avila.  He was serving a 249-month sentence for convictions of second degree murder and kidnapping in Sedgwick County. He was sentenced for the stabbing death of his girlfriend, 35-year-old Alina Burkman.   The stabbing happened in March, 2012 in a parking lot at Broadway and 47th Street South.

The Kansas Department of Corrections and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are looking into Avila’s death.
