The Butler County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving jury duty.

Residents have reported calls from someone saying they need to pay a fine to avoid being arrested for missing jury duty.  The calls have spoofed the Sheriff’s Office number and they also have had a number of 316-223-7054.

Residents are urged to never give personal information over the phone, and deputies will not ask for money over the phone or payment in gift cards.

The Sheriff’s Office has tips for avoiding scammers by phone or online:

1. Verify Caller Identity: Never disclose personal information over the phone unless you’ve verified the caller’s identity. Legitimate organizations won’t pressure you into immediate action.
2. Secure Online Transactions: Use secure payment platforms and double-check website URLs for authenticity before making online purchases. Look for the padlock symbol and “https” in the address bar.
3. Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Emails: Exercise caution when clicking links or downloading attachments from unsolicited emails. Genuine organizations won’t request sensitive information via email.
4. Protect Personal Information: Guard your personal and financial information zealously. Avoid sharing sensitive data unless you’re certain about the recipient’s legitimacy.
5. Stay Informed: Remain up-to-date on common scamming tactics. Regularly review alerts and advisories from law enforcement agencies to stay informed about emerging threats.
6. Use Strong Passwords: Create unique, complex passwords for your online accounts, and consider using a reputable password manager for added security.
7. Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter a potential scam or fraudulent activity, immediately report it to the appropriate authorities. Your vigilance can help protect others from falling victim to similar schemes.
