Record high temperatures and dry conditions have created an extreme grass fire danger across south central Kansas, including the Wichita area.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Sedgwick County and the surrounding counties, and it covers much of southern and southeastern Kansas.
A wind advisory will be in effect from Tuesday afternoon through 3 a.m. Wednesday for northwest winds 25 to 40 miles an hour with gusts up to 50 expected.
Low humidity and gusty winds will create a situation where any fires that develop could spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. People are urged to be careful with cigarettes and smoking materials and all sources of fire. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Several fires broke out in western Kansas on Monday. Crews were battling wildfires in Kearny and Seward counties. Crews in Reno County were working on grass fires west of Hutchinson and west of Pretty Prairie.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a state of disaster emergency proclamation because of the increased fire danger The declaration allows state resources to be used to provide assistance to wildfire areas. The governor issued a statement urging people to use extreme caution and avoid outdoor burning if at all possible.
Rodney Redinger, assistant fire management officer for the Kansas Forest Service, said Kansans should avoid welding, using cutting torches or engaging in any other activities that could cause a spark. Otherwise they should have a fire extinguisher, water pressure can or other device ready for use if a fire should break ot.
The Kansas Division of Emergency Management will staff the State Emergency Operations Center starting Tuesday to help counties and local responders if needed.
