An unidentified female inmate was found unresponsive in her cell Thursday at the Sedgwick County jail, and she was pronounced dead a short time later. This is the jail’s third inmate death this year and the second this week.
The Sheriff’s Office said the 41-year-old woman was found in her bed just after 7 a.m. Medical staff and EMS crews provided medical attention, but she was pronounced dead almost an hour later. She had been in the jail since February 9th for cases involving battery and disorderly conduct. The Sheriff’s Office said she had a history of chronic medical problems that led to her being hospitalized twice during her incarceration. She had received care on Wednesday and no concerns were discovered. It’s believed she had a major medical event sometime Thursday morning.
The death is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
