The Kansas Department of Agriculture has announced that starting in 2027, the state will impose a quarantine prohibiting people from planting new or moving existing Callery or Bradford pear trees.  The Bradford pear is considered to be an invasive species in many states, and although property owners will not be required to cut down those trees, the Department of Ag recommends removal.  There is talk of a Bradford pear buyback program, where property owners would be given a native tree for every Bradford pear they cut down, which is already happening in Shawnee and Johnson Counties.
