Former Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman has died at the age of 82. Lieberman, who was the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000 under Al Gore, died in New York City following complications from a fall.
A four-term U.S. senator, Lieberman was the first Jewish American candidate on the national ticket of a major party.
Lieberman’s family said in a statement he died surrounded by members of his family. Lieberman was deeply rooted in foreign affairs, becoming one of the legislative fathers of the Department of Homeland Security.
