The state of Kansas will be banning outdoor burning in 16 counties during the month of April.

This is the time of year when farmers and ranchers begin burning pasture land in the Flint Hills, and the burn ban is aimed at reducing ozone levels that would have a negative impact on air quality.

Open burning of trash, tires and brush will not be allowed during the month of April.    Fires for cooking and ceremonial events will be allowed. Burning will also be allowed for the purpose of crop, range, pasture, and wildlife or watershed management in accordance with state regulations under the Kansas Flint Hills Smoke Management Plan.  The City of Wichita will not issue any new burn permits, current permits will be suspended for the month and live fire training will be suspended.

Farmers and ranchers who conduct open burns are urged to stay up-to-date on weather conditions, especially if gusty winds are in the forecast.   Rural residents are urged to cut and maintain grass, shrubs and bushes around their property, use rocks instead of wood mulch, and keep combustible items away from homes, barns and other buildings.
