A Wichita man was sentenced Thursday to life in prison for the drowning death of his son in a south side neighborhood almost four years ago.

The sentence was given to 47-year-old William Kabutu on a charge of first degree felony murder.  He will be eligible for parole in 25 years.  He was also given nine months for each of two counts of aggravated endangering of a child, and those sentences will run consecutively.

Kabutu was arrested after a July, 2020 incident in the 5400 block of South Minneapolis.  Police said Kabutu was intoxicated and allowed his two sons, ages two and four, to get through a fence around a swimming pool.  Two-year-old Omari Garcia drowned in the pool.   Kabutu was convicted in a jury trial in February of 2023.
