Kansas lawmakers have voted to override Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of a bill to increase penalties for anyone who harms a police dog.
The bill is called “Bane’s Law” after a Wichita police dog that was killed last year by a man being chased by police. The bill calls for a minimum of 90 days in prison and a $10,000 fine for anyone found guilty of harming a police dog or horse.
The governor had vetoed the bill, saying it needs more evaluation and study. The House voted 105 to 20 to override the veto and the Senate voted 29 to 10, with both votes having the needed majority for the override.
