A Sedgwick County deputy was charged with misdemeanor battery after a recent incident in the county jail.

The Sheriff’s Office said 19-year-old Deputy Kymbal Britt was relieved of duty after an incident on April 22nd.  An inmate was banging on the door of a booking cell and yelling, and was told twice to stop, but he continued to yell and began banging on objects in the cell.   A team of deputies went into the cell and the inmate then sat down on a bench and placed his hands on his chest in a passive resistant manner.   The Sheriff’s Office said Britt stood the inmate up and struck him six to eight times with a closed fist to the head and body.  Other deputies stepped in and put the inmate in handcuffs.   No injuries were observed or reported.

The Sheriff’s Office Investigations division looked into the incident and presented a report to the District Attorney’s Office.  Britt was then charged with one count of misdemeanor battery.   He has been with the Sheriff’s Office since April 17th, 2023.
