The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has identified the two men who drowned early Sunday at Lake Afton.

Deputies were called to the lake around 1 a.m. Sunday on a report of two swimmers missing in the water.   40-year-old Wesley Simmons was yelling for help from the water, and three campers went in to try to rescue him.   They were unable to reach Simmons, and one of the campers, 23-year-old Zachary Viramontez, disappeared.

Deputies, rescue crews and EMS units got to the scene but rescue efforts were hampered by approaching severe thunderstorms.   The search continued later in the morning and the bodies of Simmons and Viramontez were recovered shortly after 11 a.m.

The incident is still under investigation and anyone with information is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 316-660-5300.
