Wichita school board members are expected to take action Monday to sell the former Park Elementary School to the City of Wichita.
The school closed last month, one of six schools that have been closed by the district to deal with a budget shortfall. Wichita and Sedgwick County officials announced a plan last week to convert the school at 1025 North Main into a Multi-Agency Center (MAC) to provide shelter and services to the homeless.
School board president Stan Reeser said the board will consider declaring Park as surplus property, then it will look at the conditional sale of the building to the city. Reeser said he and board members believe that the shelter project is “very well needed, well thought-out, well planned and will honor the tradition of Park Elementary.”
The Wichita City Council is expected to take action at its regular meeting Tuesday on the purchase of the building. The plan is to have the building available next winter as an emergency shelter, and it will be in full operation in 2026. A number of agencies will be located at the center to provide support and services to the homeless population.
