Sedgwick County Commissioners have approved a lease agreement for a new location for the COMCARE children’s programs.  The programs will be moving to the Brittany Center at 21st and Woodlawn during the next month.

Sedgwick County Director of Facilities Andrew Dilts said the programs have been located in buildings at 350 South Broadway and 329 South Topeka since 2013, but the owner is not renewing the lease.   Dilts said the county looked at 14 properties and eventually narrowed the search to a building at the Brittany Center, which will provide around 35,000 square feet.

Dilts said the new location will provide for 100 staff members, it will include a wellness and debriefing room for complex cases, and it will provide play therapy and sensory rooms, which the children’s program has not had space for.   The building will be leased for five years.

Dilts said staff is working on a capital program proposal for commissioners to look at starting with the 2026 budget cycle, and it would involve the development of a COMCARE complex that would house the adult medical, adult services and children’s programs.   He said the leases for those three programs will come to an end in 2028 or 2029, and that will allow time to work on consolidating the programs into one complex.
