Construction begins this week on a project to replace a bridge on Interstate 135 south of Newton.
The Kansas Department of Transportation is starting a $16.5 million project for the Southeast 36th Street bridge over the interstate, to make it wider with two lanes and a turn lane as well as a sidewalk. The work is expected to be completed by Nov. 1, 2025.
During the work, motorists on I-135 should expect to slow down near the work zone. Traffic will be maintained on 36th Street through the work zone, but motorists there should also be prepared to slow down for the construction.
Access to businesses along 36th Street will be maintained but could be altered at times to allow for construction operations.
