The Kansas Highway Patrol said a Trooper was involved in a fatal crash while on his way to investigate another fatal crash in northwest Kansas late Monday morning.

The Trooper was driving west on 100 South Road with emergency lights and siren activated as he approached the intersection at 40 East Road.  His patrol car entered the intersection and struck the driver’s side of a southbound SUV.  As a result of the collision, the man driving the SUV was pronounced deceased.  He was identified as 42-year-old Gerald Rahier of Hoxie.    A 38-year-old woman in the front passenger seat and a 4-year-old boy were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 3-year-old boy was also taken to a hospital but the KHP said he did not appear to be injured.   The 27-year-old Trooper was treated and released from the scene.

The crash is still under investigation.

The Trooper was on his way to a crash involving a semi and a passenger car on K-23 Highway about 12 miles north of Interstate 70 in Sheridan County.  In that crash, the driver of the car, 30-year-old Jacob Taggart of Indianapolis, Indiana, was killed.   Investigators said the car went left of center and struck the semi at the crest of a hill.
