A Kansas Forest Service aircraft was called out to help fight a large grass fire northeast of Wichita Thursday afternoon.
The fire started near 29th Street North and Greenwich Road and was pushed along by gusty south winds. Wichita and Sedgwick County fire units were called to the scene, along with crews from Andover and Butler County. Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputies and EMS crews were also on the scene.
The fire spread across a 300-acre area and there was a report of one structure, an abandoned building, that was lost to the fire, but no injuries were reported. A business was evacuated near 29th and Greenwich as crews battled the fire.
Tanker 95 from the Kansas Forest Service dumped water on the fire to help with the efforts on the ground.
Crews remained on the scene overnight to watch for hot spots.
