The Wichita Police Department has opened a hotline related to the investigation of a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s detective on improper case closures at the Exploited and Missing Child Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children task force.

The investigation was announced in mid-January when the Sheriff’s Office announced that a detective may have failed to thoroughly investigate criminal cases during a period from 2019 to 2024.  The Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) was activated to look into the matter under the direction of Sheriff Jeff Easter and Police Chief Joe Sullivan.

The Police Department said the investigation affects a limited number of cases and there will be a thorough review process.  Anyone with questions or concerns regarding a specific case that occurred between 2019 and 2024 should call the hotline at 316-268-4500.    They should provide a case number and their contact information.

The detective was assigned to the EMCU and later moved to the internet crimes task force.  The detective is on paid administrative leave.
