Today, I honor Navy Veteran Jim Nash. For 22 years, Jim Nash served in the United States Navy as a corpsman and senior chief, including during the Gulf War. Aboard the USS Guam, he participated in Operation Eastern Exit, the evacuation of more than 280 people from the United States Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1981. His daughter says he proudly served and talks a lot about his service to this day. Jim is now 71, in an assisted living home, and due to a neurological disease, in hospice care. When asked if he had something he wanted to do one last time, his answer was quick; he wanted to go to the zoo. While he couldn’t go to the zoo, they brought the zoo to him. The special visit included a monkey, a wallaby, and other animals that put a smile on his face. I hope you enjoyed your day at the zoo, Jim, and THANK YOU for your service.
