Today, the AWESOME travels from Melbourne, Australia, to Preston, England. It was a moment that was years in the making, and it may never have happened if not for a life-saving match. Luke Melling, 31, from Melbourne, had battled Hodgkin lymphoma since he was 16. After several relapses and years of grueling treatment, he was told that his only hope for survival was a stem cell transplant. With no match found in his family or even across Australia, the search went global. That’s when they found Alastair Hawken, a father-of-three from Lincolnshire, UK, was a perfect match. Alastair is a regular blood donor, and when he found out he was a match, he asked, “What can I do? Where can I be?” To say thank you for saving his life, Luke travelled to England and met Alastair in Preston, a town that meant something to both men, as it turns out they both had family roots there. When the human connection can save a life, THAT’S AWESOME.
