Today, the AWESOME is heading for Rochester, NY. Former Major League Baseball player Steven Register is fighting for his life. He received a devastating cancer diagnosis that he has been battling with resilience and unwavering faith. After chemo and numerous surgeries, the cancer was in his liver, and he needed a new one. That’s when Kristin Johnston, a high school classmate Steven hadn’t spoken to in more than 20 years, saw his story and felt compelled to get tested. In an unbelievable twist of fate, she was a match, and now Kristin’s family and Steven’s family will travel to Rochester, New York, for the transplant. The surgery, which is expected to take 12 to 14 hours, will involve removing 70% Kristin’s liver and transplanting it into Steven. Both her remaining liver and the donated portion will regenerate over time. Steven Register shared his hope for the future, saying, “Once I get my liver with all the tumor and cancer out, I’ll be cancer-free from there.” A life-saving gift from the past, THAT’S AWESOME.
