Today, I salute 101-year-old World War II Veteran Joe Peterburs. In 1942, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces and was called to active duty in 1943, earning his pilot wings and 2nd Lieutenant commission in April of 1944. At just 19 years old, he was assigned to the 55th Squadron, 20th Fighter Group at RAF Kings Cliffe, England, where he flew P-51s and completed 49 combat missions during World War II. His military career extended to the Korean War, where he flew 76 combat missions and was wounded by shrapnel and bullets during a cockpit fire. He retired in 1979 after 36 years and 5 months of active service. Last Friday, during a special event, Joe flew in formation with two other P-51 Mustangs escorting a B-17 Flying Fortress. Thank you for sharing your story Joe and THANK YOU for your service.
