Today, the AWESOME is in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. For most kids, a birthday party means balloons, cake, and inviting a handful of close friends. It’s the one day of the year when it’s totally acceptable to be selfish and make everything about you. But for Grant Mullen, his birthday wish was all about others. Grant regularly joins his father volunteering at a local recreation center for people with special needs, known as SNR. That spirit of compassion clearly rubbed off on Grant. When his birthday rolled around, he didn’t just ask for gifts or games. Instead, he asked his parents if he could invite everyone at the special needs center to his celebration. When asked why, Grant’s answer was simple and heartfelt:
“Because they don’t get invited to birthdays. Sometimes people don’t get as much love.”
Grant’s birthday wish turned into a beautiful moment of inclusion and joy, reminding everyone that the best celebrations are the ones where nobody is left out, and THAT’S AWESOME.
