Today, the AWESOME is in Sacramento, California. The terrifying scene and the heroes that saved the day is being called the “Sacramento Miracle.” An air medical helicopter had just left the nearby hospital when it experienced an in-flight emergency and crashed onto the highway. Within seconds, people pulled their cars over, running toward the wreckage as smoke poured from the aircraft. One of the first on the scene was Sacramento Fire Capt. Peter Vandersluis, who quickly realized there was no time to wait for backup. A paramedic was trapped beneath the helicopter, still strapped in by her seat belt. Vandersluis called out for help — and about 15 to 20 bystanders immediately answered. Those people, in unison, lifted the helicopter off the ground enough so a firefighter was able to slide under the helicopter, cut the paramedic’s seat belt, and pull her to safety. Heroism in numbers that saved a life, THAT’S AWESOME.
